Thoughts for Parents of Teenagers #78 – Hey, This Isn’t Easy!

Where did we get the idea that everything in life should come easy – especially for followers of Jesus Christ? There have been lots of “you deserve a break” messages from society. Unfortunately there are also lots of “Christian” messages that tell us if we do things just right God will bless us with an easier life. The Bible does not actually agree with this. In fact, God’s people have always encountered difficulty and Jesus called His followers to “pick up their own crosses” too.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” James 1:2-4 (ESV)

Raising children and preparing teenagers for life is hard work. And it tends to get even harder during the adolescent years. Living with teenagers can be an amazing experience full of great joy and at times great adversity. You will struggle as a parent – guaranteed. But know that you are not alone. My own parenting story, far from over, is one littered with feelings of inadequacy. We’ve faced frustration, disappointment, anger, sleepless nights, fear, and deep sadness along with times of tenderness to feelings of helplessness.
Parenting teens is not easy. It challenges our strength, our patience, our love, and even our faith. We need to rely on God and not ourselves through these years. But, we can and must approach this God-given role as parents as a glorious challenge and amazing opportunity. Don’t be afraid!
